Fashion shows, vernissages of exhibitions, competitions, meetings with artists – that is why an excursion to Muzeum Sztuki used to be one of the most popular forms of entertainment for the inhabitants of Lodz in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Events called Sundays in the Muzeum were organised by the Department of Education. The series became a part of the idea of an open museum implemented by Ryszard Stanisławski – a long-time director of the institution and organizer of cultural activities. Stanisławski, aiming to make art more accessible to a wide range of public, took into account the needs of each member of an audience. The programme of annual events was, thus, varied – one could participate in fairs, meetings with artists, avant-garde fashion and jewellery shows, and listen to the concerts of rock music, classical music or a brass band.
Muzeum Sztuki is only in possession of the photos from 1972 – 1981 and, therefore, is urgently seeking sound or film recordings and more photos showing these events. An interest in Sundays in the museum did not die down in the ‘80s. The events also inspired Marysia Lewandowska – an artist living in London. The project she is carrying out at the invitation of Muzeum Sztuki will be based on the documentation gathered with the help of the participants of Sundays in the Muzeum. It is going to be a part of the project Working title: archive within an international undertaking called Art has always got its consequences. The whole will contribute to the introduction of art and cultural life in Serbia, Croatia, Poland and Hungary before 1989.
