'Picasso and Abstraction' lecture by Yve-Alain Boi

Conviction that Picasso belonged to abstraction is still rather common. The artist himself and many art historians who followed his work claimed “he had nothing to do with the trend!” The lecture is an attempt designed to highlight Picasso’s ambiguous attitude to abstract art of the 20th century.  

Yve-Alain Bois is a Professor of art history at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton in the United States. Previously he worked, inter alia, at Harvard, John Hopkins University, and at the Centre des Recherches Interdisciplinaires in Paris. Under the supervision of Roland Barthes he received his PhD defending a thesis on the concept of space in Lissitzky and Malevich practice. He specialises in 20th century European and American art, inter alia, in the oeuvre of Matisse, Mondrian, Barnett Newman, and Ellsworth Kelly. 

Exhibition curator, author of many books, e.g., “Art Since 1900” (written together with  Benjamin Buchloh, Hal Foster, and Rosalind E. Krauss, 2004), “Matisse and Picasso” (1998), “Formless: A User’s Guide” (together with Rosalind E. Krauss, 1997), and “Painting as Model” (1990).
