R. H. Quaytman is one of the most outstanding contemporary American artists trying to revive and update the intellectual and emotional potential that lies in the painting medium. Her work, a constantly evolving project, is a multithread story divided into subsequent chapters which, despite their apparent separateness, perfectly connect with each other. These paintings often have a strong autobiographical basis. Feminist threads appear in her art a lot as well. Some part of the series is a record of the artist’s family history. We will find here the motives of her experiencing motherhood and raising her daughter. The Sun, the name of the first chapter, refers to the title of the newspaper in which the artist found a notification of a sudden, tragic death of her grandfather. Her visit to Łódź in 1999, for many reasons a city that was particularly important to her, initiated a fascination and then a permanent creative dialogue with the art of Władysław Strzemiński and Katarzyna Kobro. Although the impulse to create many of her works were genuine and important events in the artist’s life, these images escape unambiguous interpretation. Many a time, the interpretation only becomes clearer when one piece is put against another, that is when the relationships between them, their mutual bonds and influences are formed.

The project The Sun Does Not Move. Chapter 35 is an attempt to reread the previous chapters and return to their sources.

The book has been prepared in a bilingual Polish-English version and contains rich visual material, including photos documenting the exhibition, which took place at the Łódź museum.
