The exhibition Suzanne Treister: Prophetic Dreaming at the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź is the first retrospective in Poland dedicated to the work of a pioneer of digital, internet and new media art. Spanning more than four decades of the artist’s interdisciplinary practice, the exhibition presents Treister’s visionary and critical, yet often humorous, projects, which expose the relationships between technology, global surveillance networks, society, power, science and mysticism.
The exhibition highlights the artist’s many remarkable, and often unsettling, anticipations of events to come – made possible by the penetrating analysis of history and the present that Treister has pursued since the beginning of her artistic career. Following a chronological path from her early works, Prophetic Dreaming reveals the diversity of her practice, encompassing internet art, interactive technologies, painting, video, photography and drawing. Among her early works are the series Video Games Paintings (1989–1991) and Software (1993–1994), which depict hypothetical computer applications that foreshadow technologies shaping our experience of technology today. The exhibition also includes Treister’s most recent works, including her original tarot deck HEXEN 5.0 (2023–2025), in which the artist draws on the symbolism of tarot cards and alchemical diagrams to examine the workings of AI, the climate crisis and quantum physics.
At the heart of the artist’s practice is the question of how to save the world for future generations. Suzanne Treister seeks to find hope for the future of our world through the building of grassroots communities, counterculture and an ethics of care. Exploring alternative belief systems, building grassroots communities and creating worlds are just some of the means she proposes.
